Drew Koslow Steps Down as South Riverkeeper

Board Statement

The Board regretfully announces that Drew Koslow, who has been the South Riverkeeper for the last four years, has resigned effective July 1, 2008.

Drew has been a very significant force in the founding and growth of the Federation, and we will miss him greatly.  He has demonstrated his passion for the river over the last nine years, first with countless volunteer hours he worked to start up the Federation and then in his tenure as the first South Riverkeeper.

With Drew's leadership, the South River Federation and its partners have planted ten oyster restoration reefs with millions new oysters, restored a mile of South River living shorelines, launched a major new tributary restoration project, and brought the river and its issues significant exposure in the media and with audiences around the watershed.  Drew was key to the recent court suit against the Annapolis Town Centre for construction runoff—the first of its kind in the State of Maryland under the federal Clean Water Act.

We very much appreciate Drew’s contributions to making the Federation a strong, vital organization.  We wish him every good fortune in his new pursuits.  Drew has indicated that he will be spending the summer in Montauk, NY.

The Federation will begin a search for a new South Riverkeeper immediately under the leadership of Executive Director, Matt Berres.  Based on the response that we received in our initial search, we expect the recruitment to be successful and short.  In the meantime, the Riverkeeper’s most urgent responsibilities will be met through existing staff, Board members, and volunteers.

More than 50 friends, co-workers, Board members, Federation volunteers, and other local Waterkeepers gathered at Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Philip Merril Center Monday evening, June 30, to say farewell to Drew.  Moving comments were made by individuals including Michael Buckley, Pat Furgurson, Mary Tod Winchester and many others who have had the pleasure to work with Drew during his four years as the South RIVERKEEPER.  He will be terribly missed.
