More than 60 kayakers headed to the community beach in Hillsmere for the 6th Annual Sojourn and Wade-In! Hillsmere Shores Community Association and MD DNR's Lower Western Shore Tributary Team graciously host this year’s event. The Sojourn is truly a wonderful way to get to know your River up close and is a fun event for the whole family.
We began the morning with coffee and donuts provided by the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Co. The seine net turned up plenty of baby Menhaden, banded killifish, pipe fish, silverside, spot, and soft crabs. Around 9:30, we headed up into Harness Creek to view oyster reefs and natural habitat along Quiet Waters Park property. Then we headed back to Hillsmere beach for the Bernie Fowler-style Wade-In led by the Trib Team. The official measurment was 30' this year, deeper than any other despite the rough water. The Trib Team cooked up burgers and dogs (including veggie burgers) and volunteers brought all kinds of other delicious foods.
We got cleaned up and the kayaks back on the trailer just before the big storm came through!
