Turtley Awesome!

This summer, the Anne Arundel County Watershed Protection and Restoration Program will make major improvements to the pond at the Annapolis Harbor Center. The project is replacing an older style storm-water pond with a new wetland pond that will filter and denitrify the water before it enters the South River. The South River Federation has partnered with the Terrapin Institute in order to safely capture and transfer the turtles to a new area temporarily, so they will not be harmed during construction.

Once the new wetland pond is complete, the South River Federation will recapture all of the turtles and return them to their new and improved home. This restoration project will provide improved conditions and a better place for the turtles when they return. The wetland will be more suitable for the turtles’ needs and will allow the population to thrive. In addition, to providing the turtles with a better home, the new pond will help reduce the amount of sediment, nutrients and heavy metals that enter Church Creek, the South River’s most polluted creek. If you would like to volunteer this May to help capture, measure and release the turtles, please contact Jaclyn Fisher at This email address is being protected from spambots.
